Thailand’s Goal: Annual 5% Reduction in Tuberculosis Rate

The Public Health Ministry of Thailand has unveiled its ambitious goal of achieving an annual 5% reduction in the rate of tuberculosis (TB) cases.

Dr. Cherdchai Tontisirin, Dr. Niti Haetanurak, and Dr. Jos Vandelaer made this announcement during a press conference on World Tuberculosis Day. Despite tuberculosis being recognized globally as one of the deadliest diseases, its prevalence remains alarmingly high.

Dr. Niti underscored the severity of the disease, revealing that it claims 4,000 lives and results in 30,000 new cases every day worldwide, positioning it as the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19.

Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO), he highlighted that in 2022 alone, approximately 10.6 million tuberculosis cases were reported, leading to 1.3 million deaths, with a quarter of the global population suffering from latent tuberculosis infection.

In Thailand, Dr. Niti revealed that the WHO estimates approximately 111,000 new tuberculosis cases and 12,000 deaths annually.

However, there is a positive trend, with authorities having provided treatment to 78,000 patients, leaving approximately 30,000 patients still requiring treatment. Furthermore, the incidence of tuberculosis in Thailand has witnessed a decline from 241 cases per 100,000 people in 2000 to 143 cases in 2021.
