Uthai Thani farmer dies from smoke inhalation while burning grass

In a heart-breaking tragedy, a farmer, aged 56 years died in the field during the grass fire; he tried to control it recklessly. The tragedy, which ended abruptly on 10th of March has greatly shaken and tormented the whole community and the only name left by us to refer to the man is Piangjai in respect of the person’s family’s privacy.

Volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services were called in the middle of the night to where they found Piangjai’s dead body facing what remained of the fire. Before beginning a proper investigation, a team of authorized personnel, such as policemen, doctors, and medico-legal experts, could not find suspects’ evidence to support the case of murder and violence. With a terrible accident that seized her brother, Piangjai’s Grief-stricken family decided that it would be better not to continue with the investigation into his untimely demise any further.

The relatives told his mother that Piangjai had left home for a frivolous task on his motorcycle, not returning even after nightfall. But the problem which was a part of the mundane routine transformed into a nightmare of a circumstance when the fire he propagated rose above expectations. The battle against the fire ended tragically, as a fight for the life of Piangjai ended with him succumbing to smoke inhalation, and subsequently, asphyxiation.

The news of Piangjai’s fatal accident became public, it was a grave tragedy to remind farmers of the dangers they confront daily. While the family and friends were under a great emotional burden of the loss of the beloved community member, they could not help but wonder about the factors which led to the tragedy and the safety measures applied during the previous extreme weather events.

The recent event is a reminder of the risks involved in activities especially, during the dry season when the threat of wildfires is high. Farmers, often working in areas are vulnerable to dangers highlighting the importance of prioritizing safety measures and risk management strategies.

Following Piangjais passing his family experienced sorrow as they prepared to bid him farewell. They conducted ceremonies to honor his memory offering comfort to those mourning his loss.

In the aftermath of the incident discussions arose about raising awareness and providing support for farmers who’re crucial in sustaining communities and livelihoods. Implementing programs for fire safety education offering resources for fire prevention and building community resilience are steps in preventing tragedies in the future.
