Chiang Mai declares more districts as disaster zones amid wildfires

Wildfires persist in Chiang Mai, prompting authorities to designate three additional districts – Chiang Dao, Mae Taeng, and Chai Prakarn – as disaster zones, joining Fang and Phrao districts declared on April 4. The provincial governor noted fatigue among initial responders as a major challenge.

Governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn emphasized the need for more firefighters and hoped the new disaster zone status would unlock resources. However, Chiang Mai couldn’t be declared an emergency assistance zone due to finance regulations.

“Amidst the blaze, may our resilience shine brighter than the flames, guiding us through the darkest of days.”

Pollution Control Department reported hazardous PM2.5 levels in 36 northern provinces, with Chiang Mai recording 126.1 µg/m³, leading the list. IQAir rated Chiang Mai as having the world’s worst air quality at 190 µg/m³.

Despite concerns, Dr. Piamlap Saengsayan of the Central Chest Institute of Thailand clarified that while prolonged PM2.5 exposure may increase cancer risk, there’s no conclusive evidence directly linking it to lung cancer.
